The 3rd Annual Congressional Reception has been scheduled for Wednesday, July 15, 2009.

Please save the date!

As we have over the last two years the event will be held in the afternoon. The exact time and location will be determined later. The Congressional Reception will be on the last day of the NAEH conference.

More than two hundred formerly homeless people, passionate advocates and housing providers from across the state attended the 2nd Annual Congressional Reception on July 30, 2008. In addition, the event was attended by Senator Lautenberg Senator Menendez who hosted the event, and Congress members Holt, Pascrell and Ferguson also attended.

Mr. SIRES: “Mr. Speaker, I rise today to highlight the good work of the of Hudson County, New Jersey. They have a distinguished history of working with their partners to help the homeless in Hudson County.

I would like to highlight just a few of the good things that of Hudson County is doing in my district. They are, in part, responsible for a Bayonne facility for homeless men, a program for the elderly in Jersey City, a training program for 59 shelter residents, housing for Hudson County individuals with HIV/AIDS, meals, soup kitchens, and educational services for homeless persons.

Passaic County Freeholders Endorse America’s Road Home

On August 12, 2008, the Board of Chosen Freeholders of Passaic County unanimously endorsed the America’s Road Home Statement of Principles and Action. This America’s Road Home is spearheaded nationally the . It has also been a policy priority of the . To read the resolution approved by the Board of Chosen Freeholders click here.

The seven endorsements more than doubles the total in New Jersey that had previously agreed to endorse the America’s Road Home Statement of Principles and Action.

Now that Passaic County has signed on they are eligible to receive funding from the America’s Road Home Foundation. The ARH Foundation will be actively promoting ending family homelessness at both political conventions. To learn more about the America’s Road Home Foundation click here.

To receive “Bridge Builder - Peer Support Advocate of the Year” Award!

, Director of Consumer Connections at the Mental Health Association in New Jersey () has been selected by the National Association of Peer Specialists (NAPS) to receive the “Bridge Builder - Peer Support Advocate of the Year” Award at the Association’s National Conference held in Philadelphia, PA from August 19 -21st.

The award recognizes for his leadership in promoting peer support on the state and national level through the creation of the Community Mental Health Associate (CMHA) and Peer Specialist Associate (PSA) credentials in New Jersey, integration of WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) into peer support models, and the expansion of peer services at the Veterans Administration in NJ.

Consumer Connections, established in 1997, is a comprehensive system of training, credentialing, supporting and developing employment opportunities to facilitate the use of peers in the deliverance of mental health and human services. Since becoming Director of , Mr. Cortese has actively promoted peer support through his participation in state and local organizations and agencies.

“Within the past two years, has expanded greatly, both geographically and programmatically. In addition to a broader array of trainings, the program has established new relationships with organizations that employ consumers as providers,” stated Mr. Cortese. “In 2008 has worked with such employers as Family Guidance Center in Warren County, Drenk Behavioral Health and Delaware House, resulting in plans for a 2009 conference for mental health organizations that currently employ or will be employing consumers as providers. We have been collaborating with the Mental Health Administrators of Middlesex, Ocean and Monmouth Counties to organize this conference, which will emphasize Best Practice issues related to consumer employment. As with all programming, consumers will be involved in the development and implementation of this important conference.”
