September 13th Point in Time Debriefing

You are invited to attend a Workshop/Roundtable Forum hosted by Monarch Housing and CSH on Point in Time Counts. It will be help on September 13th 2006,  10:00am – 12:30pm at the  HRDI Training Facility – Multi Purpose Room, 200 Woolverton Ave., Building 20, Trenton, NJ. Click here for directions.

This is a venue for CoC’s from throughout the state to come together and discuss past Point in Time Counts, as well as, an opportunity to hear from guest speakers who will present new and innovative ideas that can be incorporated into the HUD mandated January 2007 PIT count.  This Forum will provide an excellent opportunity to begin the PIT process for your community, which will be followed by the roll out of the 2007 PIT Survey Tool and training's which will take place on a regional basis beginning in October.

Many of our NJ communities have had the opportunity to benefit from sharing our past and varied experiences performing PIT counts.  This Forum will provide us with the opportunity to share both our best practices as well as lessons learned, and will improve our ability to perform a successful 2007 count. With this in mind we would ask that you take a couple of minutes to write-down some of the lessons that you have learned and what you have found to work during past PIT counts, and e-mail it back to us so that we can develop a document that includes information from all of the counties attending.

The 2007 count is an opportunity to build on the statewide baseline data collected during the 2005 PIT count on homelessness in New Jersey. The better coordinated we are, the more accurate the data will be.

We ask that each CoC send a maximum of (3) three representatives to this event, and that you RSVP to Kristin Green at or 908.272.5363 by September 8, 2006.

Please forward to those in your continuum that might be interested in attending this event.

Passaic County Kickoffs Ten Year Planning Process

On Monday, July 24th nearly 200 individuals joined together to kick off the planning process for the Passaic County Ten Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness.  The event, held in the dining room of Eva’s Village in Paterson, was a huge success as there was representation from mayors, freeholders, business leaders, churches, hospitals, schools, police departments and community groups from throughout the county and state.

Event speakers included the three co-chairs of the effort, Freeholder Director Elease Evans, The Most Reverend Arthur J. Serratelli , Bishop of the Diocese of Paterson,  and Dr. James Pruden, President of the Medical Staff at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center.  Other speakers were Pam McCrory from the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency, Deb DeSantis from the Corporation for Supportive Housing, Diane Johnson from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and Assemblywoman Nellie Pou.  In addition, Mike an individual who is currently staying at Eva’s Men’s Shelter shared his personal story, stressing the importance of having a permanent place to live.

The major themes of the day seemed to be that of hope and optimism, as the invited speakers stressed the importance of working together as a group to help put an end to the homeless situation that exists not only in Paterson, but throughout the county.  As a result of the event some 50 individuals have signed on to the five task forces. These task forces will be meeting frequently between now and Christmas in order to tackle some of the major issues related to homelessness: Permanent Supportive Housing, Discharge Planning, Mainstream Resources, Health Care and Public Policy.

The group held a follow meeting attended by almost forty members of the various committees so that the formal planning process could begin.
